Description

My research project is a multi-step process of creating and producing an original short play that explores identity, along with the social themes of diversity and representation of women of color in the entertainment and arts industries. The creative processes of writers and artists (including fine and performing and other specialized artists) vary for each individual and may range from periods of quarantined focus and solitude to inspirational excursions that involve travel, social events, and personal inquiry. An active awareness of this “roller coaster” of methods and processes leads me to suggest an organized, but open, plan of action that will aid me in writing a short play.

I plan to conduct textual and performance-based in-depth analyses into the dramatic works of women and people of color, familiarize myself with the history of performances by notable figures and groups that have contributed to the positive advancement of diversity and representation in the arts, and compare my research with the current climate of the theatre scene in Los Angeles and New York. Greater knowledge on such social and cultural issues will better inform me on the background information to include or reference in my original short play.
