Partial Log of the Whale Ship Spartan
January 1, 1859-April 12, 1861

The Spartan was a 333 ton Nantucket whaling vessel. This portion of the whaling log, which begins in 1859 (the voyage originated in 1858) records the ship’s circular route from New Zealand to South America to the Bering Sea to Hawaii and back to New Zealand. The log describes various events about the ship, ship and whale sightings, weather, navigation and whale kills.
