Description

The increase in popularity of science fiction in the past 50 years has led to greater demand to see queer elements and representation within science fiction, especially in sci-fi TV shows. Science fiction and its inclusions of elements such as new worlds, technologies, aliens, and different future societies presents the perfect genre and medium through which to explore the queer, or deviations from the norm. Some queer theorists have put forth works exploring “queer reading” of texts, in which television shows are examined through a queer lens to reveal latent queer elements within the shows. In doing such readings, many science fiction TV shows have been found to contain queer ideas and elements, although they lack outright queer representation. My proposed research is to study and parse out elements of science fiction and the queer that highlight one another. Subsequently, I will search for these elements in science fiction TV shows to see if they are used to introduce queer ideas and queer space. My work will culminate in a paper defining the science fiction elements I determined as most likely to highlight queerness, as well as my results from the TV shows watched.
