Description

In an effort to provide faculty at a 4-year, land-grant research institution with resources to research and publish their service-learning pedagogy, Mississippi State Libraries formed a partnership with the Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence (CASLE). This presentation highlights the methods for beginning a partnership, including ideas like the creation of a service-learning liaison, a LibGuide, developing a service-learning collection, and connecting faculty to service-learning research in their specific fields. Additionally, the presentation includes a guide on forming and sustaining partnerships between academic libraries and service-learning entities.

Hillary Richardson

Hillary Richardson is a Research Services Librarian at Mississippi State University Libraries. She serves as the humanities subject specialist, liaison to the departments of Industrial and Systems Engineering and English, and she provides additional outreach for the Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence (CASLE). Hillary has a Master’s in English from the University of Mississippi, and a Bachelor’s degree from Millsaps College. Hillary’s interest in service-learning and civic engagement began at Millsaps College, where she received a minor in Faith and Work through the Lilly Fellowship program, which emphasized the link between vocation and the meaningful experience of community partnerships. Hillary is a member of the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and the Mississippi Libraries Association (MLA).

Dr. April Heiselt

Dr. April Heiselt holds a joint appointment as the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence and an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology, at Mississippi State University. At MSU, Dr. Heiselt co-developed the Day One Leadership program, a living-learning community, which incorporates service-learning, and serves over 200+ students each fall semester. Dr. Heiselt served as the Service-Learning Coordinator for the Day One Leadership program developing the service-learning component for the curriculum, training and working with over 100 community partners in three different cities to create a course that offers students in their first semester at MSU a chance to participate in service-learning projects that impact the community. Dr. Heiselt has spoken at numerous national and regional conferences including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), National Outreach Scholarship Conference (NOSC), Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), the National Conference on the First-Year Experience (FYE), and the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. She has also published a variety of journal articles and book chapters.

Noelle Avenmarg

Noelle Avenmarg is a master's student in Counselor Education - Student Affairs, in her final semester at Mississippi State University. Noelle was first introduced to Student Affairs through her involvement at her undergraduate institution, Mississippi University for Women, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education. In her time as an undergraduate, Noelle cultivated an interest in student diversity issues and co-founded an Interfaith Dialogue group for students, faculty, and staff. In graduate school, she worked with various campus and community organizations at MSU including United Students, the Maroon Volunteer Center, and Volunteer Starkville. Noelle is interested in applying her passion for student engagement, service-learning, and community outreach in her career as a Student Affairs professional.
