Abstract
This paper investigates how refugee farmers from subsistence contexts navigate and establish themselves in U.S. agricultural markets through hybrid institutional co-adaptation. We analyse qualitative data from focus groups and interviews with refugee farmers from the African continent and agricultural value chain stakeholders across the Midwest. We derive a multi-stage process consisting of institutional sensemaking, pushback during market navigation, hybrid institutional co-adaptation and market legitimacy.
