Description

Inspired by the C.S.J. charism, to seek out and serve all persons without distinction, two Sisters of St. Joseph shared their stories of work with the poor, both here in southern California and in El Salvador. LMU students responded to their presentation with some of their own thoughts. Special thanks to our partners, The Belles.

Speakers:

Sister Eileen McNerney, C.S.J.
Sister Eileen McNerney, C.S.J., is a life long educator, counselor, and formator. After serving in Catholic education as a teacher, supervisor and counselor, she served a term as novice director for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, she used her interest in both psychology and spirituality to create a founding vision for the Center for Spiritual Development.

When Sister Eileen moved to a gang-ridden barrio in Santa Ana in the 1990’s her eyes were opened to the sufferings and needs of the poor and to the critical issues of immigration and gang violence in densely populated Southern California neighborhoods. In 1995 she founded Taller San Jose (St. Joseph Workshop), a job-training program whose mission is to walk wounded young people out of poverty. A Story of Suffering and Hope: Lessons from Latino Youth (Paulist Press) tells the story of what she learned from the young people who walk through Taller San Jose’s door. Sister Eileen is currently a member of the Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.

Sister Elena Jaramillo, C.S.J.
Sister Elena Jaramillo C.S.J. has lived and ministered in El Salvador since 1986. She lives in the midst of the people of Tierra Blanca, Usulutan and with them has survived the violence of a Civil War and many natural disasters. As a member of a Pastoral Team her ministry extends to the people of Bajo Lempa where families struggle to make their land productive. She describes the ministry of the Pastoral Team as “the struggle to make present the Reign of God here and now against so many odds. “ Prior to moving to El Salvador she was a parish minister and elementary school teacher in various parishes in California.
