In summer 2025, Portland Parks & Recreation partnered with the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) to conduct targeted Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia) surveys in southwest Portland natural areas. The project piloted protocols from the new Natural Areas EAB Response Addendum (2025), training youth in forest health monitoring while generating baseline data to guide Emerald Ash Borer readiness. Through coordinated ash surveys, shared data protocols, and workforce development, the pilot built actionable capacity for natural-area forest health monitoring while expanding hands-on pathways into ecology, GIS, and urban forestry stewardship.
