Abstract
Pretty Broken Wings is a supernatural horror feature set in 1963 Savannah, Georgia, following Phyllis, a recent widow struggling to reclaim her freedom and sense of self after years of emotional and physical abuse in her marriage. Just months after her husband’s death, she begins a passionate relationship with a younger actor involved in a church production, awakening parts of herself she thought were long buried. But as strange visions, ghostly encounters, and disturbing discoveries begin to intensify, Phyllis is drawn into the horrifying secrets surrounding her late husband’s church and its revered leaders, Minister Houston and Apostle. As she uncovers a terrifying operation tied to illegal abortions, hoodoo rituals, and children who are not entirely human, Phyllis must confront both the trauma of her past and the terrifying truth hidden within the church walls. Blending psychological horror, body horror, and Southern Gothic atmosphere, Pretty Broken Wings explores grief, bodily autonomy, religion, shame, freedom, and the desperate human need to feel loved and seen.
