Description

My proposal addresses the need for academic inquiry into the use of commercial graphic design practices for promoting civil rights issues in the U.S. during the 1960’s. My investigation builds upon previous academic work surrounding the formal modes of graphic design, as well as the various methods employed by historical civil rights activists. I intend to research the various types of visual art that were successful in promoting social issues, as well as the intersection of these types of communication with the commercial use of graphic design. Finally, I seek to investigate how these cultural and industrial changes have influenced contemporary artists and graphic design studios.
