Description

Metal detectors have been used in a growing capacity to combat the problem of violence in the public school systems. While research has been done regarding the legality, efficacy, and disproportionate on minority students, there has been no extensive research done on the relationship between corporations and corporate reform efforts and the public school system. In my research project, I will attempt to answer the question: Do corporations that produce metal detectors, and politicians that work with these companies, implement metal detectors en masse to make more money, rather than under the belief that they actually contribute to a safer school environment? I will answer this by using the foucauldian genealogical method and conducting a case study in the city of Chicago. Chicago has a history of using metal detectors, of segregationist school practices, of corporate reform efforts, and of corrupt politicians. All of these factors considered make Chicago the best choice to explore this question. I expect my results to show that politicians and corporations directly benefit from the use of metal detectors.
