Description
Cultural tourism is a prosperous industry that holds promise for both the members of marginalized cultures and intellectually curious members of hegemonically dominant cultures. However, questions exist as to whether it is really a positive experience, or if it is exploitative for the culture involved in the tourism. I propose to spend ten days in Auckland and Rotorua, New Zealand, with fellow student Jessie Brown experiencing and researching cultural tourism as it is practiced with the Maori people in New Zealand. At the conclusion of our research, we will have created a documentary that examines the practice of cultural tourism, ultimately deciding whether that practice could be used for other marginalized groups as a way to spread their culture.
