Description

The American Democratic system is facing new challenges as political polarization increases. Regardless of our supposed separation of church and state, religion is still very much intertwined with American politics, specifically with the Republican Party. Despite a dwindling number of religiously affiliated Americans, Christian value systems affect countless political decisions. The conducted research will examine how Christianity influences Republican politicians and shapes our country’s legislation. Through examining previous legislation, Supreme Court cases, and the platforms of Republican elected officials, the effect that religion takes on democracy will be better understood. With this information, the separation of church and state will be better defended and we will be able to make predictions on the future of the Republican party and democracy.
