Abstract
I directed “Memoriam” to explore what the grieving process is like for someone who did not have the most positive relationship with the deceased. When my grandfather died two years ago, there were a lot of mixed feelings surrounding his death. As a prominent figure in American fencing, he had amassed numerous friends and enemies over the years, one fencer on Reddit described him as being “too complicated to explain,” an idea that became central to my film. Grievers often struggle with the legacies that family leave behind, but how we move forward is what defines our relationship with the deceased.
