Submissions

The Loyola Interdisciplinary Journal of Public Interest Law currently publishes one issue every Spring and holds an annual panel at Loyola’s Public Interest Palooza Symposium, hosted by the Public Interest Law Foundation. As an interdisciplinary publication, the Journal encourages creativity in candidate submissions from both legal and non-legal fields and in mediums candidates believe substantively engage the theme of the Issue. Criteria varies between the Articles, Arts, and Symposia sections.

Submission Theme and Deadline:

LIJPIL is currently accepting new submissions for Volume 2. The deadline to submit is Friday, November 8th, 2024 at 11:59pm.

The Volume 2 theme is "Transforming Housing into a Fundamental Right."

The U.S. has been experiencing a housing crisis for decades and still does not recognize housing as a fundamental right. Emergency housing measures implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic offered a transformational view of possible policies and regulations to combat the housing crisis and homelessness.

Given that many of these measures have expired, what does the post-COVID landscape demonstrate about the positive and negative impacts of these measures on populations experiencing housing instability?

How can we as advocates work with organizers and members of these communities to create an equitable housing reality?

Criteria

Submissions to LIJPIL must be emailed to publicinterest.journal@lls.edu. All submissions must be in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Please email us with any questions.

For a submission to be considered, applicants must (1) provide a cover page and (2) adhere to all requirements specific to the section(s) of the Journal they are applying to (i.e., Articles, Arts, or Symposia) listed below.

Cover Page

Each submission must include a cover page. If submitting multiple pieces, please include a cover page with each piece. Every cover page must prominently feature the following information:

  • Applicant pronouns (optional)
  • E-mail address
  • Daytime telephone number
  • Affiliated school/firm/organization (if applicable)
  • Title of piece
  • Journal section applicant is submitting to (i.e., Articles, Arts, or Symposia)
  • Page length (if applicable)
  • Word count (including footnotes) of manuscript (if applicable)
  • Medium and dimensions of piece (Arts Section submissions only)
  • Applicant bio (1-2 paragraphs, single-spaced)

Articles Section Specific Requirements

Applicants may submit a total of 30 written pages per piece of single-spaced scholarly articles, lectures, and/or practitioner essays they believe substantively engage the Issue theme.

If images are included in the body of the piece, please ensure they are high resolution digital images.

Arts Section Specific Requirements

Applicants may submit a total of 20 written pages of creative writing, poetry, autoethnographic works, plays, or narrative-based pieces and/or up to 10 individual art pieces (e.g., photography, illustration, paintings, pictures of sculpture or ceramic works, etc.) per Issue. Submissions need not be single-spaced, particularly if not doing so is integral to the piece’s form.

In addition to your abstract, please provide a 1-10 page, single-spaced description of how your piece contributes to, investigates, challenges, and/or suggests we consider the law as it relates to the Issue theme. The “law” can be a specific piece of legislation or policy; a legal theory or pedagogy; cultural shift or movement; issue area not receiving enough or proper attention; solution to a legal problem; etc. We encourage creativity in your response.

Descriptions should be supported by research, methodologies, and/or footnotes where applicable, with relevant sources and authorities cited. Citations may be in MLA, Chicago, or Bluebook format.

If your Arts submission includes images, please ensure they are high resolution digital images.
