Abstract
By merging Hip-Hop Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed methodologies in my Latin American theatre course, I created liberatory tools that can heal and strengthen vulnerable/marginalized communities of actor/playwrights. These methodologies help students learn fundamental acting and playwriting skills through the creation and performance of their own original work. In this chapter, I argue these methodologies and practices challenge the status quo of contemporary actor training in the United States by incorporating Latinx student voices in the creation of new material. As a result, I aim to create an actively engaging pedagogy where my students critically question and challenge predominantly white spaces to build deep intersectional, culturally conscious understanding of their historical and contemporary identities through embodied and multidisciplinary performance.
