Abstract
The Definitive Assessment Playbook: Tips and Tools for Educators of Multilingual Learners is a practical, evidence-based guide designed to humanize classroom assessment and elevate the agency of all assessment players. Grounded in the Science of Teaching and Learning and structured around twelve Focused Assessment Principles, the Playbook translates research into actionable practices, tools, and reflection opportunities for classroom, school, district, and community learning ecologies. Practical tips, tools, reflection templates, and inquiry frameworks support assessment players in applying these principles to build fair, balanced, learning-centered, and sustainable assessment systems for multilingual learners.
The Playbook includes five sections organized around major themes: (1) attending to assessment players by centering multilingual learners and family funds of knowledge; (2) co-constructing personalized assessment portraits that capture students’ linguistic and learning assets; (3) viewing assessment as relationship building to enact a balanced assessment framework across four complementary approaches (of, for, as, and through learning); (4) shifting assessment mindsets by reconceptualizing classroom assessment, deficit terminology, Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and academic language; and (5) building community with assessment players through technology, collective advocacy, viable assessment systems, and continuous learning. Evidence-based practices—including integrating content and language development, leveraging oral and home languages, fostering cross-linguistic connections and peer interaction, and using multimodal approaches—illustrate the research-to-practice connection.
