Photographer Lou Dematteis has documented the physical and emotional reality of those affected by this toxic contamination, roughly thirty times greater than the more widely reported Exxon Valdez oil spill. Their powerful images are accompanied by moving first-person testimonies from the victims, and also document the uplifting story of efforts by local communities to seek justice and to prevent further drilling.
This exhibition also included photography by aerial photographer, environmental activist, and educator John Quigley.
The panel presentation included Lou Dematteis, John Quigley, Dr. John Dorsey, and Dr. Joseph Rasmussen. Dr. John Dorsey is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at LMU and is an expert in the study of marine biology and pollution ecology. He has experience in monitoring coastal marine habitats and water quality.
Dr. Joseph Rasmussen is LMU’s Sustainability Manager and is responsible for analyzing current sustainability data, environmental stewardship and green initiatives at LMU. He develops and implements programs, initiatives and resources to promote campus awareness and visibility of sustainability issues, in addition to collaborating with the community on sustainability matters.
This event was part of the 2012 Bellarmine Forum, "Health Now: Questions, Controversy and the Promise of Prevention."
