Description

Since 2020, up//root has been a home for BIPOC in LIS to publish creative, critical and experimental works that center our authentic identities and lived experiences. In this presentation, current up//root editors Megdi Abebe and Kristina Santiago will discuss lessons learned in stewarding this unique publication and our latest project HOME: an exploration of being and belonging in resistance. We’ll explore the challenges and opportunities involved in project planning for an emerging publication, particularly when collaborating with individuals across different time zones, nation-states, and identities. We will examine ethical considerations that arise when engaging in the publication process, particularly with regards to ethics of care and conscientious citation, and explore how critical-creative projects rooted in community necessitate leading with love and care. Moreover, we will discuss our guidelines and editorial process, emphasizing transparency and communication when building trust among contributors, peer reviewers and editors. Our process is community-invested, centered on fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility amongst collaborators while developing high-quality and impactful features that resonate with BIPOC LIS and archive professionals. For the past couple of years, up//root has been sustained through a labor of love and community. Our path is riddled with change, compromise and self-reflection - all inevitable in our journey to redefine home.

Outcomes

  • Participants will explore how an ethics of care benefits creative process
  • Participants will learn about up//root’s submissions criteria and editorial process
