Description

To put it simply, there aren't enough BIPOC librarians, let alone librarians in administrative/higher-level roles! Based on data from the 2010 American Community Survey from the Institute for Museum and Library Services and National Center for Education, there were only 6,100 African American librarians across the nation out of over 118,000 total. While one would hope that those numbers have improved, the truth is that we need to see more of us at the top of the organizational chart. This can sometimes come with a level of pressure that is difficult to work through on your own. This presentation will discuss what it's like to navigate the first year of administration and venture through a professional level of work where you don't see yourself represented on the team. This session will explore tips/tricks that can lighten the load of the first year , while also exploring the joys and challenges of leadership.

Outcomes

By the end of this presentation, attendees will:

  • learn tips and tricks of how to navigate the first year in administration
  • be able to use and apply lessons learned to their future career moves
