Abstract
Meghan Murphy’s argument essay describes the celebration of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. She argues that through its culturally inclusive, interactive, and dialogic approach, Día de los Muertos, as hosted by Self Help Graphics and Art, initiates a positive affective response within the attendees and renders the qualities of the New Museum. This essay critically examines the procession of participants, the interactive volunteers and ofrenda, and the booths hosted by community members within the Día de los Muertos celebration. Meghan’s paper was written for the First Year Seminar class, Museums: Race, Power, Identity, fall 2014, taught by KarenMary Davalos and Annemarie Perez.
