Description
Community Based Learning courses are on the rise at American University. Under the Guidance of the Center for Community Engagement and Service (CCES), faculty build courses that focus students’ attention on the intersection of community involvement, academic study, and practical experience. Just as these programs are beginning to mature, the Faculty Senate Committee on Learning Assessment (COLA) has begun promoting AU’s new institutional learning outcomes, including information literacy. This presentation will explore the role librarians played in including information literacy as an institutional learning outcome and ways they have reached out to service and community based learning groups on campus. Finally, it will evaluate COLA’s work mapping institutional learning outcomes to the curriculum in an attempt to learn how well the connection between service learning and information literacy has been established.
