On March 25, 2022, Loyola's Professor Kevin Lapp and the Law Review hosted a special festschrift symposium honoring the career and work of Professor Emeritus Samuel H. Pillsbury. Professor Pillsbury began his career as a journalist, before working at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Criminal Division in Los Angeles. He joined the faculty at Loyola Law School in 1986 and since then has published prolifically on a wide variety of subjects in criminal law. Most recently, his work has focused on the importance of empathy and respect toward both victims and offenders in the criminal justice system, as expressed in his 2019 capstone book, Imagining a Greater Justice: Criminal Violence, Punishment and Relational Justice.

For his retirement, Loyola invited distinguished speakers from around the country to comment on Professor Pillsbury’s scholarship and his service to the community both at Loyola and in Los Angeles.
