Description

Abstract

Libraries are a cultural resource and community sanctuary for all people to have access to free educational tools, language-building opportunities, and support from information professionals. These institutions are critical for diverse groups for growth and advancement in society. We live in one of the most diverse countries in the world with a multitude of languages, cultures, ethnic identities, religions, sexual orientations and gender expressions living side by side every day. We learn and grow with one another, and should celebrate our differences in a safe environment. My talk will include a list that discusses practices to be implemented in academic and public libraries to create a welcoming environment for queer and trans folks from all backgrounds. Discussion surrounding book displays, disseminating relevant information for local queer and trans communities, providing space for clubs and organizations, and active allyship will be included.

Speaker bio

I am a South Asian librarian living in the south. I enjoy pop culture, anime, graphic novels, and zines. My focus is on providing knowledge to diverse communities.
