Abstract
Hailey Merrick’s essay Reinforced Chaos transports us to the destructive and unstable world of pre-World War I Germany. She argues that the Expressionist artist Ludwig Meidner’s work, Apocalyptic Landscape, represents the anti-modernist perspective of the Die Brucke group of artists. “The bleakness of society is conveyed in Apocalyptic Landscape’s storm-like clouds looming over a fear-stricken metropolis, foreshadowing violent energy to come.” This paper was written for Damon Willick’s First Year Seminar Class: Culture, Art, Society, Modernism, fall 2015.
