Reflection

In the Reflection section, JHE publishes scholarly/literary articles of inspiration, aspiration and motivation. While educators so easily can be consumed by duties, details and deadlines, the opportunity and value cannot be overestimated of raising the eyes a little from the path below our feet to look at a broader horizon.

Scholarship

As a scholarly online journal, the “Scholarship” section of JHE constitutes the core of this publication. It presents peer-reviewed articles on a wide range to topics germane to the special and in some cases unique qualities of Jesuit higher education. “Scholarship” covers a broad scope of writing, from data gathering and analysis, to professional reflection and critique, to theory and philosophy, studies of history, studies based on literature review, and advances in teaching and learning in higher education. It covers what Frederick E. Crowe, S.J. has termed, “the way of achievement and the way of heritage,” and what Bernard Lonergan, S.J. described for theology (and we suggest for all of scholarship) as “the ongoing interplay in human history of tradition and innovation.”

Praxis

The “Praxis” section presents articles that focus more on the practice of teaching and the experience of learning. These articles represent dimensions of professional discourse rooted in the world of theory but engaged in the activities of the academy. Theologian, David Tracy, S.J., explains that, “any proper understanding of praxis demands some form of authentic personal involvement and/or commitment.” Argentinian theologian, José Bonino, suggests praxis is not merely the application of theory (whether secular or theological) but that it engages theory, and perhaps transforms it from a basis in the real world of lived experience. Accordingly, articles appearing in “Praxis” are not of a “lower” order that those of “Scholarship” but rather are parallel, bring to the conversation questions for Jesuit higher education rooted in the real-world experience of teaching and learning.

AI Policies

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal seeks to create not simply a venue for rigorous scholarship on higher education in the Jesuit tradition but also a community of scholars and practitioners committed to the flourishing of this tradition. Scholarship submitted to the journal must therefore be at the service of what Pope Francis has described as a “culture of encounter,” in which participants share the particularities of their experience and the uniqueness of their perspectives to form a “whole [that] is greater than the part” (Fratelli Tutti, no. 215). When crafted with this spirit, articles published in Jesuit Higher Education serve as a means of connection between the author, who contributes insight and expertise cultivated through their work, and the reader, who seeks relevant reflections for their own life. To preserve this culture of encounter, Jesuit Higher Education has adopted a discerning stance on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), employing the following policy guidelines to ensure that the journal remains a space facilitating the human connections necessary to sustain the community that supports the work of higher education in the Jesuit tradition:

For Authors
Consistent with guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Jesuit Higher Education maintains that AI tools do not constitute authors and cannot be identified as a contributing author. AI tools therefore should not be used to such an extent that if a human author were to have made the same contributions, they would merit credit as a coauthor.

Authors are responsible for disclosing any AI tools used in the creation of any part of a submission to Jesuit Higher Education. This includes but is not limited to the use of AI in idea generation, data analysis, refining examples, and writing or editing any portion of a manuscript. Following the Chicago Manual of Style, “content developed or generated by artificial intelligence” must be appropriately cited, and any prompts used to generate AI outputs should be included. Editors at Jesuit Higher Education will review the use of AI in any manuscript submitted to the journal and may reject extensive uses that limit human authorship and forestall the development of the culture of encounter the journal strives to maintain.

Authors remain responsible for all content in their submissions, including any AI-derived content. They should review any AI-derived content for accuracy, with special attention to the risks of bias, hallucinations, and misinformation to which AI is especially vulnerable.

For Reviewers and Editors
In keeping with the goals of community formation at the heart of the journal’s mission, editors and peer reviewers are prohibited from using AI tools in their evaluation of submitted manuscripts, in the creation of their written reports, and in their communications with authors.

Out of respect for an author’s rights to their own work, peer reviewers and editors are prohibited from uploading any portion of a manuscript or reviewer report into AI tools as many AI programs preserve text submitted in their prompts and use this information for their own proprietary purposes. Authors have the right to expect that their work and their ideas will not be shared beyond the journal during the process of review and preparation for publication.

For the Future
Recognizing that the use of AI continues to evolve and that AI’s impact on academic publishing is still unfolding, the journal reserves the right to update and modify its AI policies as necessary. In particular, cognizant that “the natural environment is a collective good, the patrimony of all humanity and the responsibility of everyone” (Laudato Si’, no. 95), the journal wishes to be especially attentive to the environmental costs associated with the growth of AI and will attempt to weigh this impact when reviewing its AI policies.
